Optimizing a fitness machine for reduced footprint within stability and performance constraints.
problem started with an infeasible design with a footprint of 1.344 m^2 and ended with a feasible design with a footprint of 0.922 m^2, a reduction of 31.4%. The use of response surface approximation techniques allowed the optimization to only require 28 explicit analyses, and the sequential quadratic program to solve in no more than 6 iterations with no more than 36 function evaluations from all initial designs, which is a low computational cost for finding a 31.4% decrease in footprint while making the design feasible.
